“Growing Pains,” focuses on the pain of loss and failure, as well as the necessary growth that follows. I am exploring what it feels like to fall flat on your face after putting forth every effort you have; how it feels to grapple with the loss of something that used to be the reason you got out of bed in the morning; and how this seemingly meaningless suffering shapes us into the individuals we are meant to be. What does it mean to inflict this loss upon oneself for the sake of your own growth and development? This ongoing project is a visual representation of my journey through failures, losses, and redirections of ideas that once seemed like the only constants I had. It explores the in-between spaces within loss and the growth that comes with it–more specifically the spaces where someone or something feels like it is missing, and nothing feels quite right. Something that used to be a great comfort that somehow no longer holds a space in your life at all. The risks, loss, and experimentation that come with working in film photography and development, especially while working in color, further develop a theme of growth and adaptation in the face of loss and adversity. In working in analog photography, I am also able to find an additional degree of closeness with my work, learning to embrace the mistakes and accept my photos as they are, something I am working to learn not only in my art, but also in life as well.
