Now more than ever, growing into the mind and body of a young woman under the influence of government-encouraged religious ideals and expectations is a process that comes with much doubt, guilt, and a complete lack of control. Women are told they must conduct themselves according to the expectations of a book written by a few men over a thousand years ago. This text, one that preaches kindness and respect in all things, has been used day after day by government officials to justify stripping away human rights and forcing socially conservative ideals on the whole of the country.
“Turning Point” is an exploration of feminine autonomy within the confines of Christian ideation. This narrative is based on my own. Feeling trapped by the confines of my own mind, I began an exploration in Christianity–an attempt to save me from myself. Rather than feeling empowered, I found nothing but empty promises and a community that values men above all else. My body is not allowed to be my own, but rather owned by God and the husband I choose to submit to. Decisions are being made about my own body that I cannot control. When did my body stop being my own? What gives you or anyone else the right to make decisions about someone else’s body based on a faith that they don’t believe in? If this is salvation, maybe I don’t want it.
